I've been thinking about playing around with free OSs and virtual machines ever since I heard about them many years ago.
As a sales rep at Dell I got to hear about all the cool technologies being built but never got hands on experience with the products.
I attribute most of my 'power user' knowledge to three people; Brian Summers, Jacob Ulrich and Justin Rockwell. All three are or have been Dell folk.
So I helped out a friend with ordering and setting up a new computer. They replaced two computers with one so I took their oldest off their hands. This was a week ago. Now it's the perfect opportunity to check out these things I've been just a spectator of for so long.
Last night I wiped the old eMachine clean. This computer has 2gb RAM, 200GB hard drive, P4 2.8 I think. I searched for 'best free OS' and there was an article about Fedora 17 so u went with it. I'm vaguely familiar with Red Hat from my Dell days so I figures it was a safe bet. I could've just as easily went with any other from OS that came up.
Installing Fedora was super easy. I downloaded the install package from the fedora site. Link.
2. I booted the eMachine with the CD I burnt the image on to
3. Fedora asked if I'd like to install the boot data to the hard drive and since I didn't want to keep having to boot from the cd I said yes.
Then it installed.
I changed the settings as I preferred and a was off and running.
This morning the first thing I did was check on Netflix. Didn't work.
